Become a BLUE or WHITE collar worker!

Ola! It’s Julie 👩 Ever wondered what the difference is between blue and white collar work? Today, I’ll explain the differences and why these are excellent fields to work in right now!

First off, what is blue and white collar work?

Blue collar means workers who are involved in some sort of manual labour at work. This could be construction, manufacturing, warehouse and driving among others!

White collar work is more office-based, and can include administration or computer-based work. It’s less physically demanding than blue collar.

3 benefits of blue and white collar work

⭐Salary increase

White collar workers across the UK have experienced an increase in salary. In fact, customer service has the highest salary increase so far in 2021! This is closely followed by social care and hospitality.

⭐Large demand for workers

Recent research has shown that blue collar work had the highest increase in demand for short-term workers in the UK. Many businesses are looking for blue collar workers right now, which means you have plenty of options to choose from.

⭐Minimal experience required

One of the greatest things about blue and white collar work is that there are lots of opportunities for people with no experience (especially in blue collar!). This means you can get started quickly, so long as you show the right work ethic.

🤫 How to job hunt whilst you’re still employed

Hey, Julie here👋 Job hunting whilst you’re still in a full-time job? It’s a tricky one. You only want your employer to find out once you’ve secured your new role, right?

Here are a few tips to help you land your next role without your current employer finding out!

👉Don’t use office time

The worst thing you can do is carry out your job search during office hours. That’s just asking for trouble. Instead, use your evenings to apply for new jobs to ensure none of your colleagues find out.

👉Preferred contact time

On your CV, let employers know which times are best to contact you and how. Can you take calls? Or would email work best? Can you answer during your lunch? Either way, make this clear on your CV to avoid any mishaps.

👉Keep it to yourself

It might be tempting to tell your work mates that you’re looking to leave, but keep it to yourself. Rumours tend to spread like wildfire in offices.

👉Don’t share it on social media

I know you’re excited about moving jobs, but avoid posting about your hunt or complaining about your job on social media. You never know who is watching or where your post will end up.

👉Stay professional

Although you’ve mentally clocked out of your job, do your best not to let it show. If you come across as demotivated, this can draw attention to yourself and raise your manager’s concerns. Continue to maintain your professionalism and work ethic.

👔 What should you wear for an interview?

Hey there, Julie here👋 Got an upcoming interview but wondering what to wear? Well, first impressions do count so you’ll want to make sure you’re looking your best.

Rule of thumb

If you’re not sure what the dress code is, always opt for corporate and professional. It’s much better to be overdressed than under-dressed!

👨Men

Generally, a blue or grey tailored suit is a safe option for men. But if you feel like standing out, there’s nothing stopping you from adding a pop of colour!

👉Don’t drown yourself in aftershave. There’s nothing wrong with a light spritz, but wearing too much can be really off putting, especially if the interviewer doesn’t like the scent!

👉Make sure your shoes are immaculate with a good polish and remove any scuffs.

👉Opt for a long-sleeved shirt.

👉Use a neat and combed hairstyle.

👉Avoid jeans. They may be okay if you’re told the dress code is casual. But to be on the safe side, choose tailored trousers.

👉Trim your nails.

👉Carry a portfolio or briefcase

👩Women

Women tend to have a wider variety of interview attire. You could opt for a trouser suit, skirt and shirt, or even a smart dress.

👉Make sure your skirt and dress aren’t any shorter than just above the knee.

👉Avoid any low-cut tops.

👉Don’t wear too much perfume.

👉Keep your makeup light and natural.

👉Avoid chipped or brightly coloured nail polish.

👉No peep-toe shoes.

👉Avoid big, statement earrings and lots of bracelets.

💙 Boost your confidence after job hunt rejection

Hey there! It’s Julie 👩 Doesn’t it hurt when you get rejected from a job? It can feel a little soul-destroying, right? Especially when you reaaally got your hopes up.

In this post, we’ll work through this rejection so you can spring back to being the best version of you 🤩

👉Let yourself wallow

Allow yourself to feel upset and frustrated. It’s all part of the process. But don’t allow this feeling to overcome you. It’s important to remember everyone faces rejection at some point – even the world’s most successful people have been rejected MANY times.

👉Distract yourself

It’s easy to feel like you constantly need to search for a job when you don’t have one. But this will only run you into the ground. Make sure you give yourself a break by doing something therapeutic like exercising, DIY or gardening.

👉Show yourself some love

Don’t get hung up on your flaws. Remember you’ve actually got a lot to offer and to be proud of. If you’re feeling low from a rejection, try making a list of all your achievements and positive attributes.

👉What would your idol do?

Who do you really admire? Think about what they’d do in your situation and take inspiration from that. Chances are, your idol has dusted themselves off and looked to the future many times.

👉Grow from the experience

Every challenge provides an opportunity to grow and better yourself. Ask yourself what you learnt from the experience, and how you can do better in future. And finally, thank the experience for the lessons it brought you!

Good luck – you’ve got this 🔥

👺 😍 Remote working: love or hate?

Hello! Julie here 👋 Did you know, in 2020 the number of employees working from home almost doubled?! Now, remote working is offered as standard by many companies.

Whilst lots of people enjoy remote working, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea… ☕

Pros

👍 Saves time and money

With no daily commute to work, you save yourself time and money. You can use those extra hours to catch up on your sleep!

👍 More job opportunities

With more companies offering remote working, you can now apply for jobs in different cities. This is particularly true for people working in customer service and tech (check out our remote working jobs).

👍 The comfort factor

When working from home, you can be as comfortable as you like (yes, that means working in your pjs some days!).

Cons

👎 Hard to concentrate

WFH = distractions galore. It can be really tempting to pay a visit to the fridge, or stick on the TV, or you might just struggle to block out the noise in the rest of the house.

👎 Work and home life blur

Under normal circumstances, you get to separate work and home life with the help of an office. But when it’s all under one roof, it can be tempting to continue working if you have a heavy workload.

👎 Lack of team spirit

Although you might have a daily Zoom meeting, team spirit isn’t quite the same with remote working. If you really enjoy being around people, remote working isn’t the one!

So which would you prefer? Work from home… or from office?!

🚀 Hospitality: Tips to progress into management (fast!)

Hey there🙋‍♀️ What’s the great thing about working in hospitality? Well, apart from the tipping culture, you can also progress into management positions very quickly if you display the right work ethic.

So let’s take a look at all the ways to make yourself stand out as a hospitality worker.

⭐Create a memorable experience

Customers are spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants. So it’s important you create a memorable experience so they keep returning because they love the level of service.

⭐Be proactive

As a waiter / waitress, there are countless things to be doing at any given moment. Whether it’s taking a drinks order, seating new guests, or polishing the cutlery, make sure you never find yourself standing idle. Always look for ways to keep yourself busy.

⭐Help your colleagues

Great hospitality is about teamwork. Make sure you seek opportunities to help your team. It may be as simple as clearing a table whilst they take an order, but this sort of helpful attitude will take you far because you’re putting the restaurant’s needs first.

⭐Cross-sell

Hospitality is technically a sales game. The higher the bill, the better the restaurant does. Show an interest in seeing your restaurant succeed by going out of your way to cross-sell products like side dishes, wine or desserts.

⭐Suggest improvements

Don’t simply wait for your manager to tell you how to do something better. You’re on the frontline and can spot inefficiencies easily. So when you spot that something isn’t working, quietly suggest an improvement to your manager. They’ll soon see you take your job seriously and can be relied on!

With restaurants in the UK reopening, there are now thousands of new job opportunities available. Head over to the ‘Jobs’ tab to have a browse📲

🚫 5 reasons why your CV is getting rejected

Hey, it’s Julie👋 Are you wondering why your CV keeps getting rejected? I’m about to tell you why – but first, you need to promise you’ll actually action my tips, and not just read them!

Deal?!

Alright, let’s get to work.

👎Typos

Correct spelling and grammar is the most basic expectation for your CV. Typos scream carelessness.

✒Carefully read through your CV, checking for mistakes

✒Get a friend to proofread your CV

✒Use a spell checker like Grammarly

👎Too generic

Include keywords and tailor your CV to the types of jobs you’re applying to. It might sound like a faff, but if you’re serious about getting a job then you need to create multiple versions of your CV to make it relevant.

👎Chunky paragraphs

Hiring managers don’t want to read long paragraphs in your CV. They want to see short and neat bullet points that summarise your previous jobs and make it super easy to read.

👎Too long

Your CV should be no longer than 2 pages. Cut your job descriptions down to only the most essential points. You don’t need to include your references either!

👎No summary / personal statement

You need to captivate the hiring manager with a standout personal statement. It should explain your relevant qualities and experience in a nutshell, and why they want to continue reading your CV.

If you can correct all of these points in your CV, I guarantee you’ll start to see more success!

Now get cracking!

📦 Top 6 benefits of working in warehousing

Hello friend 😄 Have you been considering working in warehousing? Warehousing work tends to have a bad rep, but actually it has a lot to offer – so today I’m running you through the top benefits of becoming a warehouse operative!

👉No experience needed

It’s easy enough to start working in warehousing even without experience. So long as you display the right work ethic and come across as a reliable employee, you can get your foot in the door.

👉Flexible shift patterns

Can you only work nights? Or perhaps you need to start early and finish by noon? Warehousing provides a variety of shift patterns so you’ll be able to find something that suits your schedule.

👉Pandemic-proof

Warehousing has been one of the few sectors that continued to hire throughout the pandemic. This means you’re likely to always find available work, even under the current circumstances where things can drastically change from day to day.

👉Quicker promotions

You can progress into supervisory and management positions in warehousing MUCH quicker than in other jobs. Even if warehousing isn’t your end goal, being able to gain management experience is a valuable skill for your CV.

😕 Should you take a job you don’t really want?

Aloha friend 👋 how’s life treating you? I know it’s taking you a while to find that dream job, and you’re probably asking yourself: “should I take a job that isn’t my dream job?”.

The answer to this question is going to depend on your circumstances.

Ask yourself these 3 questions:

👉How are my finances looking?

Do you have savings to cushion you whilst you’re unemployed or are your funds running low? You don’t want to leave yourself financially vulnerable. So if your funds are looking light, taking a ‘mediocre’ job is a good solution until you find the right role.

👉Can a ‘mediocre’ job help me to progress into something better?

Even if it’s not your dream job, remember to use foresight to assess how a mediocre job can help you land a better role in the future. Think about the skills you’ll use and learn, and whether this will be useful to your long-term career aims.

👉Will this mediocre job give me mental space?

If you’re going to take a job that isn’t your dream job, it’s important that it doesn’t drain all your energy since you’ll still be working towards your long-term goals. If you can find a role that isn’t stressful and doesn’t exhaust you, it could actually be a great support to you whilst you take your time looking for the right role.

💫What’s the answer?💫

Accepting a job that isn’t perfect doesn’t have to be a bad thing. It’s a temporary solution that can support and enable you to eventually move onto something better.

Think of your job hunt like baking a cake; any average jobs that you take are just ingredients that help bring the cake together 🎂

Good luck!

🎓 6 powerful ways to improve your English for work

Hey, it’s Julie 👋 Speaking English is, of course, an important part of working in the UK. But what do you do when English isn’t your first language? How do you get better?

The trick is to fully immerse yourself in the language as. much. as. possible. Here are my tips:

  1. Learn new vocab daily

Get into the habit of learning 5-10 new words/phrases per day. Start with words or phrases that you’ll need to use regularly at work.

  1. Take English courses

Learning with a structured course and a teacher is an excellent way to improve your language skills. You can find free and cheap courses online on sites like Udemy.com

  1. Use a language learning app

Apps are a great way to learn languages on the go. You can use them whilst on your lunch break or during your commute to work. Check out ‘Duolingo’ and ‘Babbel’

  1. Read and write in English daily

It’s super important that you practise reading and writing in English so you can open yourself up to even more job opportunities. Try finding an interesting article online to read, and writing a few sentences to summarise it in your own words!

  1. Find a language partner

Having a language partner allows you to learn new vocabulary and put your speaking skills to the test. Tandem.net is a fantastic site to find a language partner.

It’s totally possible for you to drastically improve your English. You just have to be committed to immersing yourself in it for the next 6 months. Trust me, if you do this you’ll be shocked at how you improve!

Live, breathe, sleep & eat English – you can do it! 💪

Take care,

Julie💜
